The VA Greater Los
Angeles Healthcare System has one of the most advanced
Windows-based computer documentation systems in the United
States. All clinical encounters are documented by an electronic
progress note, thereby making notes, consults, and discharge
summaries readily accessible in any area of the hospital.
Additional
patient data on the computers include: all pharmacy information,
laboratory data, pathology reports, radiology and nuclear
imaging reports, operative procedure notes, and all procedure
reports, including cardiac catheterizations, echocardiograms,
ETT, endoscopies, and PFTs.
In addition, there are special
high-resolution terminals in all patient care areas where
all radiology studies can be viewed. Radiologic studies
become available for viewing on these terminals immediately
after the images have been taken. The addition of these
terminals to the ward floors and other clinical areas
has made patient care infinitely more efficient and convenient.
The computer system also provides
another great convenience: instant access to reference
materials. Every computer within the hospital can access
the Internet. Available references include Harrison’s
Online, UpToDate, Best Evidence (ACP Journal Club), Cochrane
Database of Systematic Reviews, and Ovid Medline. Complete
journal articles from nearly all major journals are available
on-line for review and printing.
