Graphic: History BookNational VAVS Structure is reflected by the National Advisory Committee, which was formed May 17, 1946. It was federally chartered on February 5, 1975. The Chairperson is the Chief Communications Officer at VA Headquarters in Washington, DC. The Deputy Chairperson is the Director, VA Voluntary Service, at Headquarters. Membership criteria for the National Advisory Committee is:

  • Service Member: participation at 30 facilities minimum (VA has 172 total)
  • Associate Service Member: Participation at 15 facilities minimum.
  • Donor Member: Donates significant funds at 30 facilities minimum.
  • Associate Donor: same as Donor, 15 facilities minimum.

The VA Voluntary Service also has an Executive Committee as a resource, VISN Liaisons, and of course, the Voluntary Service Chiefs at the local facility level.
